I wish there were a way to prevent stuff like this. This is similar to the Democrats being allowed to swap out Toricelli for Lautenberg in the NJ senate race. These types of things subvert the entire democratic process.
What really annoys me is that the idiots in power who do these things don't give any consideration to the longer-term consequences. Yes, you can gain the advantage momentarily by throwing the old rules out the window (although gaining a senate seat is a pretty big long-term advantage given that US voters will only dump an incumbent for extremem malfeasance). Unfortunatley for everone, the other side can and will now do it to you the first chance they get. Another parallel was when NJ was considering taxing Pennsylvanians who worked here. They projected millions in additional revenue. Duh, how long will it take PA to retaliate and tax all the NJers who work in PA (Philly is chock full of them).
The Republicans shouldn't be surprised when the Democrats start putting up 'independent' candidates for the Republicans just to siphon off their voter base. I can just see the Limbaugh ticket forming right now.
